Last Wednesday Fredi Rahn spoke to our group, showing us her hand-building technique and some slides of her work.
Fredi studied Ceramics at Sheridan College (Ontario) and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and since 1990 has taught at Emily Carr University and Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
While we tried to figure out projector, laptop computer and memory stick compatibility Fredi started the evening by rolling out a thin slab of red earthenware clay.
She demonstrated the use of several texture methods, several of which involved a clay mould. Then she showed the careful way that she assembles previously stamped and cut-out shapes, forming them into a squared but curved-wall vessel.
Members were most impressed with her painstaking process and delighted with the completed form.
Fredi then answered questions about glazing. The presentation was completed with a short but satisfying slide show of her pieces in use, inspirational plants, her garden fence-post of a teapot and some of her new work in cone 6.
Thank you Fredi for a well-planned talk and demonstration. We enjoyed learning your favourite techniques and your honesty about life as a potter.
Great photos and a very nice summary of her presentation, Gill. Thanks for doing this.
