After a number of firings I was able to take the last of the current batch of Raiders’ work out of the kiln on Friday, before I left for Shadbolt Centre for the soda firing.
This post features the work of Philippe Raphanel, Mina Totino and her friend Michelle Normoyle.
Philippe spent much of the day applying several layers of colours with a clear purpose in mind. He had an image on hand for inspiration. He paints acrylic wax over the first colours, leaves it to dry and then paints or pours more liquid underglaze over that. The resist effect reveals some of the earlier colours, but it does provide challenges for me. There are residual chunks remaining after the bisque firing, and even after the glaze firing some unstuck areas of colour arise so I sanded them a little, applied more glaze and fired them a third time. Philippe says he likes the complicated look of the finished layers. Take a look.
Mina enjoys working on a large platter or charger for her colour-soaked brush work. This coral pink round charger is striking. I have included the underside of the oval platter as that’s where there’s more happening!
Michelle painted one of my large platters with geometric designs, then decorated three of her own commercial vases forms, and completed her painting day with one of my boat-shaped dishes and a little saucer.
