On Saturday, a week ago, Alan and I popped in to the Equinox Gallery rather early for the opening of two new shows. We were on our way to the Stanley Theatre’s matinée of Pride and Prejudice, but didn’t want to miss Renée Van Halm’s ‘Nudge’ show opening entirely. Stupidly I didn’t take any photos at all but if you open this link you’ll see five pages showing most of her splendid paintings.

Several people have asked why there weren’t any of her recent painted plates and platters. The Raiders know that she has been producing some remarkable work on clay, with underglazes. But perhaps she considers them to be more fun than work!
On the day after her show opened I took the most recent plates out of the glaze firing so I must share them with you. Renée and I had made a large lamp-shade dish for her and it is rather spectacular now. The finished diameter is 15″ and 2 1/2″ deep. I’ll include again a photo of the piece under construction so that you can see the shape, as the photo of the finished piece doesn’t show that.
The two smaller oval plates are the new shape I’ve made for the current Western Front Gala Auction. Renee rather likes the non-rimmed sixties shape of it. She has donated the yellower one to the group of six.
The other one is very similar to one of the paintings in her Equinox show.
The other artist currently showing in the Equinox Gallery is Vancouver artist Greg Murdock.
And Alan was happy to see a house-front painting by Sonny Assu in the back room.
