Pots on Granville Island

Recently I made one of my trips in to Granville Island to deliver pots. High time!

At the Gallery of BC Ceramics I brought in some of my new salty mugs, a couple of vases and a jugbird. They also now have some oval, slip-decorated earthenware plates.

It’s always interesting to see the work of new artists to the gallery. Recently juried in is Vic Duffhues, from Vancouver Island. with his beautifully thrown ware. He has a cool lava-like white glaze on parts.

The other new gallery artist is Harriet Hiemstra. Her hand built earthenware forms feature drawings on their surfaces.

And the non-juried featured artist for the month of August is Liz De Beer from the Sunshine Coast. Africa is the influence for her carved surfaces. They look like wood block prints and are very striking.

I left some salty beakers, vases and birds at Circle Craft and I imagine they are displayed now, once the labels have been computer-generated.

As usual I checked to see who is manning the shop at Kingsmill Studios and this day it was Don Hutchinson. He was working on a delightful hand-built ‘Bird-Bath’. He and his wife Louise will be leading the Denys James tour of Sicily in September. It should be a great pottery-focussed holiday for clay fanatics.

Then on Monday, the day before we left for our brief holiday on Hornby Island, I delivered pots again. We had opened the kiln on the Saturday and Al took photos of ‘Raiders’ Plates’ and my 15 new jugbirds. First I went to Crafthouse YVR with their order of 12 jugbirds.

Then I popped by the Western Front to leave the latest group of plates for Eric, Sally and Katie. Nora Vaillant met me there to collect her pots from the recent salt firing. Sadly she had been unable to be there when we unloaded. I hope we’ll get a third firing this Fall, in November perhaps.
