For Rebecca and Elizabeth underglazes are a whole new medium, and the idea of not knowing the final colour or surface texture until after two firings is a challenge. I can provide glazed sample ‘cookies’ and discuss thickness and layering but it sometimes needs a couple of painting sessions for an artist to achieve the result in her mind.
Rebecca painted three plates this day. The first had a pre-selected coating of bright orange-red underglaze on the bone-dry plate and I should have watched for how many layers of colour were laid on top of that. The bisque firing lifted an area of colour from the surface so I’ll give R a chance to fill that in again, and I’ll rebisque and then glaze it. I’m sure it will be fine.
