Eric Metcalfe organized another ‘Raid’ for yesterday and Eli Bornowsky, Jacqui Ross, Paul Mathieu and Karen Henry joined the expedition. Each person let me know ahead of time what colour they’d like their plates to be painted, if not left white. I apply my coloured slips to the plates when leather hard, so some were Naples Yellow, Green, Blue and Grey. Paul asked me to make him my biggest platter once more. It’s quite a challenge to make, but with Al’s help I was able to flip the slab into the form.
It was a lovely day to have guests here, I managed to glaze my work and turn on the kiln as well as throw some new jugbird bodies while they painted, and we enjoyed a potluck lunch and later a birthday tea-party out on the patio. It was Eric’s birthday so Karen brought a delicious mango cake. Perfect!
Alan took random photos of the artists as they painted and chatted so I’ll just include some to give you an idea of our busy but productive day. You’ll recognize Eric’s design and will see that Paul simply spent his day carefully inscribing lines on his platter. He plans to add underglaze colour in the grooves once I’ve bisqued the piece. Now my guests will have to wait a couple of weeks for me to complete some work to fill the kiln again.
As I usually do, I’ll post photos of the work when it’s glazed and fired and you will see the bold and unusual results from yesterday. Paul’s may not be finished until he makes another trip out here to complete the line colouring. He’ll be back teaching at ECUAD this Fall and he tells us that his main colleague will be Brendan Tang, who will be replacing regular faculty members on sabbatical for the year.
Looks like fun Gill, as usual. I really appreciate the patterns on Paul’s platter. Big job.
