It’s more than two weeks since Raiders Mina Totino, Kate Metten, Michelle Normoyle and Tamara Mills were here, and Eric Metcalfe and curator Kate Bellringer were here just after that so they’ve all had to wait patiently while I glaze-fired all their plates. Of course there was the exciting soda firing in the interim too.
Alan took photos of all the work this weekend so now I need to get the record of work created in my studio up-to-date.
To start with I’ll share photos of plates painted by the first four Raiders.
Kate Metten spent all day working on two of her marvellously meticulous paintings on two lunch-size plates. I wonder how she’ll decide which one will be shown in our group show in August.
Michelle was very productive on that day, with four different shapes completed. There are two square plates, one with a map-like design and the other a soft tartan, then a boat-shaped dish and finally a tiny but charming little triangular dish.
Her daughter Tamara applied her loose pastel-coloured meandering lines to a large round plate and an off-square plate.
She has a knack of making pleasing designs with no apparent effort. The backs of the plates have surprises too – darker patterns. Her last piece is a little dish with overlapping transparent circles.
Mina chose to use the cheerful coral colour for her two platters, and applied colour and patterns on the backs. Her large black plate has a striking array of grey shapes in one area. This plate warranted a second photo to show the very different reverse side.
I’ll show the plates painted by Eric and Kate Bellringer and some other work, by me, in the next blog.
